We’re a long way from warm spring days and we’re guzzling through more energy than at any other point of the year, now is as good a time as any to look at ways you can cut down on your energy bills.

There are some really simple things that will save you a lot of money over the course of a year.

We waste so much energy without even thinking about it, and let’s face it, it’s expensive.

If you dread seeing the bill come through the door, follow these tips to start bringing those energy bills down each month.

Turn down the thermostat

Turning down your thermostat by just one degree will save you up to £65 per year.

You’re unlikely to notice the difference in heat, but you’ll definitely notice on your energy bills.

Close doors and curtains

Closing your curtains at dusk and keeping doors closed on rooms you’re heating will stop heat escaping.

If you have single glazed windows, invest in some thick heavy curtains, or to be super thrifty make your own if you know your way around a sewing machine!

You’ll notice a significant difference in room temperature meaning you won’t have to have the heating on full blast.

Bleed radiators

Bleeding radiators releases trapped air, helping your radiators to work more efficiently.

The more efficient the radiator, the less energy it is using to heat your room – simple as that.

Don’t heat empty rooms

There is no point in heating empty rooms, you’re just wasting your money.

Keep the door shut too, this ensures the rest of your home stays warm.

Give empty rooms the odd blast to avoid damp issues, but apart from that just leave it off.

Eliminate drafts

Draft excluders are great to keep out drafts, but they also prevent heat escaping out of the room too.

Fitting curtains on external doors stops heat escaping out of your letter box and keyhole.

Wrap up warm

Every dads favourite line, but they have a point.

Don’t dress for the beach in the middle of winter.

Slippers, jumpers and sitting under blankets means you won’t have to have the heating on so high.

Set the timer on your boiler

Heating your home when you’re not in is a total waste of money, however coming home or waking up to a freezing house isn’t very pleasant.

Set the timer on your boiler to come on just before you get up, or get home.

That way you have a nice toasty house, but not the whopping energy bill at the end of the month.

Tin foil

Fitting foil behind radiators, particularly those on exterior walls, will help to reflect the heat back into the room instead of it being absorbed by the wall.

You can get specialist radiator tin foil, but in all honesty regular kitchen tin foil works just as well.

Switch energy suppliers

Don’t be scared about switching suppliers,  it’s the easiest way to save yourself a few hundred quid.

Not only that, you can fix down the price and protect yourself from any potential price hikes.
