One of the easiest ways you can cut down on your supermarket spend is by shopping using the price per unit method.
Supermarkets have been bamboozling us for years with BOGOF deals, multi packs and special offers.
From where the food is placed, to the music you hear in store, it’s all aimed at making us spend more.
So before you go thinking you’ve got yourself a bargain, there is an easy way to make sure it is a good deal for you, rather than the supermarket.
How do I work out the price per unit?
The good news is you don’t have to be a maths whiz to work it out as mysupermarket.co.uk has done all the hard work for you.
But, the method goes like this:
Total price – divided by total weight – multiplied by 100
So for e.g. £2.50 – divided by 750g – multiplied by 100 = 33.3p per 100g.
Why work out the price per unit?
Quite simply the deal you see in front of you isn’t always a very good deal at all.
For instance, a four pack of beans could be cheaper to buy as four separate cans.
Buying in bulk is also not always the cheapest.
We’re lead to believe that buying in bulk, or buying the bigger sized item is cheaper, but it’s not always the case so checking the price-per-unit let’s you know  whether it a god deal or not.
On average shopping this way saves you 30% off your grocery bills – not bad eh?
Other useful tips
