You water bill isn’t cheap, and it is fast becoming one of things that people have fallen behind on when they seek debt advice from us.

There are plans to deregulate our water supply so we can find a cheaper supplier, much in the same way as energy market was, but it’s not coming for a while.

Bearing that in mind it is important to look at ways you can cut your bill down yourself.

It’s really not as hard as you might think, and over the course of a year it could save you some serious money off your bill.

Below are some fantastic hacks to help you cut down the cost of your water bill and do you bit for water conservation too.

How to reduce your water bill

Turn off the tap when you’re brushing your teeth

Did you know by leaving the tap running when you’re brushing your teeth you’re throwing away 6 litres of water per minute?

Spend five minuted brushing your teeth twice a day and that’s 60 litres of water washed down the drain.

If you’re a family of five that’s 300 litres of wasted money and water per day.

Imagine that’s pound coins you can see going down the drain to help refocus your way of thinking and remind you to switch off the tap.

Take shorter showers

A shower can blast out between 6 and 45 litres of water per minute.

If you’re taking a shower for 10-15 minutes a day, try and reduce it by half.

You’ll have to get washed up a lot quicker, but the difference on your bill over the course of the year will be extremely noticeable.

Invest in a cistern displacement device

A cistern displacement device reduces the volume of water used in each flush.

You can pick them up for under £20, a worthy investment when you consider what it will save you in the long run.

Fix leaking taps

Dripping taps waste up to 15 litres of water a day, that’s a huge 5,500 litres of water a year you’ve paid for that has gone straight down the drain.

It’s not too expensive to fix them, especially when you consider how much they’re costing you when left unattended.

Only wash full loads

Only use your washing machine or dishwasher if they’re full.

If you’re doing lots of small washes you’re wasting water, electricity, detergents and therefore money!

Chill water

Stop running the tap until the water is cold.

Fill a jug full of water and put it in the fridge so you always have nice cool water without the need to pour a load of it down the drain.

Final word

All the tips mentioned above are things we can all incorporate into our lives fairly easily and can significantly reduce your water bills.

Getting children to comply might not always be the easiest, however, maybe you could offer up some sort of treat out of the money you have saved if they stick to the new regime!
